WPD is a Distribution Network Operator, distributing electrical power to its nearly 8 million customers in the United Kingdom. Field operatives literally “keep the lights on” 24/7 for customers via on-going maintenance, repairs, upgrades and important safety measures on the network. Its 4500 front line field workers are responsible for covering and maintaining overhead/underground lines as well as sub-stations across 55,000 square kilometers of contiguous geography.
WPD initiated a Workplace Transformation Project-Secure Mobility Platform with the goal of improving the operation, service and economic costs within the region it serves. The key strategy was to introduce a mobility platform to replace old paper based data capture and input processes for use between geographically dispersed field operators and offices. Utilizing the Good Dynamics secure mobility platform, WPD sought a mobile app that could be embedded into the day to day activities of field workers, enabling them to better perform their duties and communicate with offices.
In January 2014, WPD initiated its “Field Mobility” plan and equipped field workers with iPads. In 2015, SmartOffice was introduced as part of this plan to enable timely, quality document management, access, reporting and sharing from over 4,000 geographically spread employees in the field.
SmartOffice enabled field operators capture and report data and information (e.g., field reports, updates, pictures of on-site situations) in real time, communicating directly from the field to line management via iPads using SmartOffice as part of Good Dynamic Platform solution.
WPD’s program and use of mobile devices has demonstrated how a “consumer device” can become a workable enterprise solution that drives change and enhances performance. It has proven successful on multiple levels – increased efficiency, enhanced functionality, improved asset management – as well as achieved financial validation. With the aid of SmartOffice, WPD has demonstrated how mobile applications can drive enhance organizational efficiency and performance that benefits both customers and the enterprise, improving network performance and service while reducing customer costs.
